Meeting of the working group on the development of the Advanced Migration Profile of Kazakhstan took place in Astana

11 July, Astana – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of Population of the Republic of Kazakhstan held the first consultative meeting of the working group on the development of the Advanced Migration Profile of Kazakhstan for the years 2020-2024.

The working group consists of representatives from government bodies, including the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of the Population, the Ministry of Healthcare, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of National Economy, the Bureau of National Statistics of the Agency for Strategic Planning and Reforms, the National Bank, the Academy of Political Management of the "Amanat" party of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and the Otandastar Foundation.

"The Migration Profile is an instrument owned by the governments and the methodology is developed through active consultation with governmental and non-governmental stakeholders. Its development demonstrates a commitment to comprehensive and evidence-based approaches to effective migration management. The Migration Profile provides up-to-date information on issues such as regular migration as well as analysis of migration data. These data help to understand the impact of migration on the labour market, demographics, and migration policies at the national, regional, and global levels," said Pablo Rojas Coppari, Senior Research Officer at IOM Headquarters in Geneva, who spoke online.

During the meeting, the methodology for preparing the Advanced Migration Profile of Kazakhstan was discussed, and a list of statistical indicators for the study was formed. These included trends and characteristics of migration, and the impact of migration. Further steps for the preparation of the profile in cooperation with government partners were also discussed.

The event was organized within the framework of the IOM regional project "Labor Migration Program – Central Asia" with financial support from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
