The final Sub-regional Round Table on the Global Compact for Migration

The final Sub-regional Round Table on the Global Compact for Migration (GCM) took place in Almaty on 14 May 2024 within the IOM sub-regional project “Supporting the Governments of Central Asian States in the implementation of the Global Compact for Migration (GCM)”. The sub-regional project is funded by the IOM Migration Resource Allocation Committee.

Mr. Zeynal Hajiyev, IOM Sub-Regional Coordinator for Central Asia, and Mr. Aituar Mamlin, Counsellor of the Department of Multilateral Cooperation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, welcomed the event participants. Over 30 representatives from Governments of Central Asian countries, non-governmental sector, academia, expert community from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan took part in the event. The participants of the round table discussed further steps in the implementation of the Global Compact on Migration following up the Second Regional Review on the GCM in UNECE region that took place in Geneva on 11 March 2024, as well as further actions to strengthen sustainability of the project so that the GCM is advanced both at country and regional level.

In addition, as part of the round table, the project results have been discussed and recommendation prepared to intensify the efforts of states and relevant stakeholders in the implementation of the GCM.
