National consultation on the UN Network on Migration in Kazakhstan
NUR-SULTAN – In Kazakhstan, a national consultation on the UN Network on Migration will be launched with the participation of representatives of relevant ministries of the Republic of Kazakhstan, government agencies, akimats, the private sector, public organizations, and academia.
The UN General Assembly, in its resolution 72/244 of 10 December 2018, confirmed the need to sign the "UN Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Legal Migration (GCM)". This agreement was supported by more than 150 countries, including the Republic of Kazakhstan. To ensure a coordinated UN system-wide support to States in implementing the GCM, the UN Network on Migration was established.
The goal of the UN Network on Migration is to mobilize all international organizations in the Republic of Kazakhstan to solve problems related to migration flows. According to the UN Secretary-General, Mr. Antonio Guterres, the UN Migration Network will be based on a partnership in which the International Organization for Migration (IOM) / UN migration Agency will play a central role. The network has a flexible and inclusive structure and is aimed at promoting the coordinated work of complementary rather than duplicative organizations, with the ultimate goal of making migration beneficial for all.
In 2019, the UN estimates that there were about 272 million international migrants in the world. The link between migration and development is increasingly recognized as a key area of development, which determines policies and measures aimed at enhancing the positive impact of migration, minimizing the negative impact and more effective integration of migrants in countries of origin. It is becoming clear that the relationship between migration and development is most strongly felt on location, so it is best to approach migration-related issues locally since local authorities are better able to respond to migration issues and opportunities than others. The Global Compact on Migration seeks to find solutions to these and other challenges.
The event is held within the framework of the implementation of the Memorandum of cooperation signed between the IOM Mission in the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Population of the Republic of Kazakhstan on 5 December 2019.
