9th Senior Officials' Meeting of the Almaty Process took place in Baku
The 9th Senior Officials Meeting of the Almaty Process — a regional consultative process on refugee protection and international migration to, from, and within Central Asia took place in Baku on 25 June. The Almaty Process inсludes 10 states and 3 international organizations. Senior officials from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkiye, Italy, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan attended the meeting.
The event featured presentations on the work accomplished and planned activities within the Azerbaijan's chairmanship priorities within the Almaty Process. The agenda included reports from the State Migration Service on “Looking back and forward to the Azerbaijan’s chairmanship to the Almaty Process: an overview of the Chairmanship’s priorities and planned activities," and "Road to COP29: 2024 United Nations Climate Conference”, while the representative of IOM Regional Office in Vienna addressed human mobility in the context of climate change.
The meeting continued with panel discussions on “Climate induced migration in the Almaty Process region: current challenges and proper response mechanisms". The panel discussions included presentations by authorized representatives of Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkiye, Kyrgyzstan, and Italy.
The event concluded with plenary discussions on the draft Baku Declaration to be adopted during the next Ministerial Conference of the Almaty Process.
Established in 2013, the Almaty Process serves as an interstate consultation mechanism (ISCM) on the protection of international migrants and refugees arriving to, from, and within Central Asia. It supports the implementation of the Global Compact for Migration and the Global Compact on Refugees at national and regional levels, acting as an equitable platform for exchanging information and best practices, as well as enhancing the capacities of its participating and observing states. IOM and UNHCR serve as the Secretariat of the Almaty Process.
