Second Asia-Pacific Regional Review of Implementation of the GCM
The Second Asia-Pacific Regional Review of Implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration is taking place in Bangkok, Thailand from 4 to 6 February 2025.
In 2018, Kazakhstan voted in favour of the GCM, supporting the collective commitment of Member States to improve cooperation on international migration. The Global Compact is guided by the 2030 Agenda of Sustainable Development Goals. The GCM is based on international human rights norms and standards. In implementing the commitments made in this regard, Member States ensure that the rights of migrants, regardless of their status, are effectively respected and protected at all stages of the migration cycle.
The purpose of the second Asia-Pacific GCM Regional Review is to provide an opportunity for ESCAP members and associate members, as well as other relevant stakeholders, to assess progress on the 23 GCM objectives in the Asia-Pacific region since the first review, identify challenges, opportunities, and needs for the implementation of the GCM objectives, while formulating key finding and recommendations to inform the 2026 International Migration Review Forum (IMRF), and to discuss regional priorities and potential areas for regional cooperation on international migration in line with the vision and guiding principles of the GCM.
On 4 February High-level panel was conducted on Regular Pathways for Migration. The panel brought together governments, international organizations, and stakeholders, to explore strategies and address challenges in enhancing regular migration pathways in the Asia-Pacific region. It served as a platform to discuss actionable strategies to advance their accessibility, for the benefit of societies and of all migrants, including those in vulnerable situations, while fostering partnerships between different stakeholders in the Asia-Pacific region.
Kazakhstan is represented by Mr Askarbek Yertayev, Vice-Minister of Labour and Social Protection of Population of the Republic of Kazakhstan. He presented the review on the progress of Kazakhstan on the implementation of the GCM.
The International Organization for Migration provides comprehensive support to the Government of Kazakhstan in the implementation of the GCM objectives.
