Capacity building workshop on the use of administrative/statistical data on migration statistics in Kazakhstan
The International Organization for Migration (IOM), further leveraging its global expertise in migration data, continues to support government of Kazakhstan in advancing its migration data governance framework based on its commitment to advancing migration management through comprehensive data systems aligned with global standards. As part of this commitment, IOM organized a technical-level capacity-building workshop for technical representatives from the Agency of Statistics, the Migration Committee of the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, the Migration Committee of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, as well as the Information and Computing Center and the National Bank in Astana, 24 February 2024.
The workshop aimed to enhance the utilization of national administrative data for migration data compilation and to address common challenges in data collection and analysis. The training further focused on introducing best practices and international standards, presenting methodologies to enhance the reliability of administrative data and ensure that migration statistics are timely, reliable, and comparable. It sought to improve participants' understanding of migration data systems by offering insights into the opportunities and challenges of using registration records to identify places of usual residence and produce estimates of population movement, including short-term and circular migration statistics.
The event was conducted under the “Regional Evidence for Migration Analysis and Policy” project funded by the European Union and synergized with the “Labour Migration Programme” project in Central Asia, funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.
